Batch Task Descriptions

These are the individual batch tasks which can be run on project files. You can run tasks individually or you can put several of them into a task sequence and run the sequence. When you run a task sequence, all tasks in a sequence are applied to all selected files.

Task
Description
Analyze Files
Analyzes source files against the translation memory, producing statistics on the leverage to be expected during translation. The Analyze Files task works with project translation memories if it they are available. This task also generates the Analyze Files report.
If you perform the Analyze Files task on *.sdlxliff files, the source language segments will be analyzed.
Studio performs this task by default when a project is created as part of the Prepare task sequence. It is also part of the Analyze Only and Prepare without project TM task sequences. You can run this task as part of the task sequence or by itself at any time during the project lifetime.
By default, the Analyze Files task always runs after the Pre-translate Files task. This is to avoid reporting incorrect locked-segments results. Make sure that you also run the Analyze Files task after the Pre-translate Files task for all your custom task sequences.
Analyze Only
Analyze is a batch task sequence, not a batch task. A task sequence contains a series of batch tasks.
Apply PerfectMatch
If you have closely related files that have been translated previously, for example previous versions of the same file, and you have the *.sdlxliff files that were produced at that time, PerfectMatch can extract translations from the *.sdlxliff files and apply them to the new project files. This task also generates the Apply PerfectMatch report.
NOTE
This task is run as part of the Prepare without project TM and Prepare task sequences. You can also run the Apply PerfectMatch task after a project has been created.
Convert to Translatable Format
Converts the selected source files to *.sdlxliff file format. A single *.sdlxliff file is produced for each source language file in the project. The content of the source language file is segmented and placed in the source segments in the *.sdlxliff file.
This task does not appear in menus as it is only applicable when you are creating a new project.
This task is part of the Prepare batch task sequence.
Copy to Target Languages
After a file is converted to a translatable format in the Convert to Translatable Format task, this task takes the files and produces a bilingual *.sdlxliff  file for each of the target languages and copies the file to the target language folder in the project folder structure.
This task is performed by default when a project is created as part of the Prepare task sequence.
Create Regulator Review Bundle
If you work in a regulated industry and have purchased a license containing this feature, you can send a bundle of files to an external regulator for review. A bundle is a zipped file that contains a specific collection of documents needed by the regulator. The reviewed target document from the bundle can then be imported back into Studio using the Update from External Review task and the *.sdlxliff updated with edits, tracked changes, reviewed statuses and comments.
Export files
Exports the selected files to a folder of your choice (outside the current project folder. By default the files are exported in the document format in which they were originally created. However, you can also export them as bilingual *.sdlxliff files or in whatever their format is currently. This is useful if you want to send the files for review to someone who is not using SDL Trados Studio while keeping the project files in their current state (in *.sdlxliff format).
Settings for this are specified on the Batch Processing > Export Files page.
Export for External Review
For reviewers who do not have Studio installed, you can export the *.sdlxliff file to a bilingual docx format which can be opened in Microsoft Word. The reviewed document can then be imported back into Studio using the Update from External Review task and the *.sdlxliff updated with tracked changes, reviewed statuses and comments.
See How to Send Files for External Review for more information.
Finalize
Finalize is a batch task sequence, not a batch task. A task sequence contains a series of batch tasks.
Generate Target Translations
This task generates a translated version of the original file that was submitted for translation. For example, if the original file submitted for translation was a Word document, a translated Word document is produced.
The translation text is taken from the target language *.sdlxliff file for the document. The location to which the translated file will be generated defaults to the same location where your source and bilingual documents are saved in your project.
Prepare
Prepare without project TM
These are both batch task sequences, not batch tasks.
Populate Project Translation Memories
Creates a project translation memory for each target language (if one does not currently exist) and updates the project translation memory with translations. A project translation memory contains translations taken from the translation memories selected for a project.
This task is performed as part of the Prepare task sequence when a project is created. You can also run this task at any time during the project lifetime.
Pre-translate Files
Pre-translates project files by applying translations from translation memories, terminology databases (termbases) and previously translated files. Pre-translation refers to the automatic translation of segments in the source files. This task also generates the Pre-translate Files report.
By default, the Pre-translate Files task always runs before the Analyze Files task. This is to avoid reporting incorrect locked-segments results. Make sure that you also run the Pre-translate Files before the Analyze Files task after for all your custom task sequences.
Pseudo-translate
This task sequence simulates translation on a files to see how the translated documents will look after translation and how much extra engineering work will be required before actual translation is done.
Performing this as an individual task only shows you how the target translations will look in the bilingual *.sdlxliff document. If you want to see how it will be displayed in the final generated document, perform the Pseudo-translate Round Trip sequence.
Scan
Identifies the file type of each project file and, for translatable files, identifies the file filter that will be used to process the file.
This task is automatically performed on all files when you create a new project or when you add new files to a project.
Translation Count
Generates the Translation Count report which provides details about the status of the translations in your project. For example, the status of a translation may be Translated or Translation Approved.
Update from External Review
If you sent your files for external review using the Export for External Review batch task or the Create Regulator Review Bundle batch task, you can import the content of the following reviewed documents back into Studio:
·         Bilingual review documents (*.review.docx)
·         Target review documents (*.target.docx)
This import updates the target segments in the *.sdlxliff project file with any edits, tracked changes, reviewed statuses and comments.
Update Main Translation Memories
Updates all of the main translation memories with translations from the active project or from the active document. By default, any translations that have a status of Translated, Translation Approved and Signed Off are updated to the translation memory. When a translation unit is updated, the custom fields values specified in the translation memory update settings are automatically assigned to the new translations.
This task also generates the Update Main Translation Memories report which displays the results of the update.
Update Project Translation Memories
Updates the project translation memories with translations from the active project or from the active document. By default, any translations that have a status of Translated, Translation Approved and Signed Off are updated to the translation memory. When a translation unit is updated, the custom fields values specified in the translation memory update settings are automatically assigned to the new translations.
This task also generates the Update Project Translation Memories report which displays the results of the update.
Verify Files
Runs selected verification checks on files. This task also generates the Verify Files report.
Word Count
Counts the total number of words, characters, segments and recognized tokens in one or more files. This task also generates the Word Count report.
